Welcome!
This site will provide you with background on the Common Core Mathematics standards, information for parents and families to stay informed, tips, and resources.
Let’s start at the beginning. The development of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) began in 2009 with the leadership of the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO)(corestandards.com).
Previously, each state had developed their own unique standards for each content area. The CCSS were developed in order to standardize what it means for a student to be proficient across all states, as well as to assure that students are college and career ready. Many support this view and believe, "The CCSS will bring philosophical, curricular, instructional and assessment changes to public education" (Wallender, 2014).
After receiving input from the public including teachers, parents, school administrators, and other citizens, the final version of the standards went out in 2010, and were adopted by some states as soon as the 2011 – 2012 school year.
